The North Norfolk Railway operates steam and heritage diesel trains through beautiful coastal countryside between the Georgian town of Holt and the smart Victorian seaside resort of Sheringham. The 5½ mile line attracts around 165,000 passengers each year, is one of the County’s most popular tourist attractions and hosts a series of popular annual events including the Steam Back to the Forties in September and the acclaimed Norfolk Lights Express in November and December.
Job Summary
The North Norfolk Railway in conjunction with its charitable supporting organisation, The Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway Society, are seeking a suitable candidate to employ on either a Level 3 Engineering Fitter Apprenticeship Scheme or Level 2 Engineering Operative Apprenticeship, based at the Heritage Railway’s Engineering Workshops in Weybourne, Norfolk.

Basic Function/Job Summary
Throughout the duration of the apprenticeship, you will learn and gain experience in the fundamentals of mechanical and electrical engineering through both practical workplace training at the North Norfolk Railway PLC at their Engineering Workshop facilities located on the outskirts of Weybourne near Holt. This combined with training at either the College of West Anglia (Level 3 Apprenticeship) in Kings Lynn, or City College Norwich (Level 2 Apprenticeship), depending on the most suitable College in relation to the successful candidate’s geographical location, on a day release basis. You will need to make your own transport arrangements to attend College one day per week, and attend the North Norfolk Railway Engineering Workshops at Weybourne for the remaining working week
The apprenticeship will continue for a minimum of 3 years day release for the Level 3 Apprenticeship or 2 years day release for the Level 2 Apprenticeship at the relevant College, when not attending College, you will spend the other days in the workshops at Weybourne where you will rotate around the various engineering teams across our business. You will be taught and will be able to put into practice engineering skills which will be key for the Engineering Fitter role.
These include the following teams:
- Running Shed – which undertake the routine maintenance and repair of a fleet of historic steam and diesel locomotives.
- Carriage & Wagon – which undertake the routine maintenance and repair of carriages and wagons used on the Railway.
- Contract Engineering – which undertake the overhaul and repair of steam locomotive boilers, and steam locomotive chassis.
- Machine Shop – which undertake the machining of a diverse variety of parts and castings required by the above departments.
Person Specification
- Minimum entry level qualifications of English and mathematics at GCSE grade 4 or 5.
- Strong desire to learn and develop with an ability to easily adapt to new ways of working.
- Evidence of interest in developing a career in Engineering.
- Practical experience of engineering activities is an advantage but not essential. This may include:
- Hobbies or voluntary work.
- Previous work experience.
- Engineering related school subjects.
- Good IT skills. A working knowledge of Microsoft office programs and Excel is sufficient.
- Ideally able to demonstrate a strong work ethic, eg through part-time employment and / or voluntary activities.
- Ability to work in a physically strenuous environment.

Additional Requirements:
- Ability to attend college at their required start to finish times each week during term-time.
- Ability to attend Work Place from 08.00hrs to 17.00hrs on non-college days each week.
- Weekend working may be required at Galas and Special Events during the Railways Operating Season.
